BURNED BUT NOT BROKEN: A STORY OF HOPE AND STRENGTH

On September 14th, House of Covenant International Church (HCIC) was targeted in an arson attack and was destroyed in a fire. The fire marked a devastating moment for the congregation and its surrounding community. For many, it was more than the loss of a building; it was the loss of a home, a place that they loved, nurtured faith, relationships, and memories. Yet, amidst the ashes, the community has found remarkable strength, rooted in their faith in God, shared vision and unwavering hope.

The initial days were heavy with trauma. Yohannes, the church’s Lead Pastor, felt the weight of responsibility settle on his shoulders. “If I go down, the community may go down with me. But if I rise up, they will rise as well,” he said. Those words reflect the determination that has carried the congregation forward. The first couple of days hit him hard, but he drew inspiration from the story of David in 1 Samuel 30 and the assurance that God’s strength would sustain them.

Support began pouring in almost immediately. Church members rallied around one another, leaning on their shared faith and unity. Beyond the congregation, the community extended hands of help and encouragement. A vigil was held October 19th near the fire’s site that brought together government officials, neighbours, and church members, reminding everyone of the importance of standing together during times of loss. Among those who attended were MBCM pastors and staff, with Jason sharing a few words of encouragement and support during the gathering.

The vigil served not only as a time to remember the lives lost but also as a call to raise awareness about the broader issue of attacks against churches.

Yohannes shared how the church’s focus shifted from grieving what was lost to envisioning what could come next. “The trauma has settled down because everyone is looking at the future,” he said. Plans for rebuilding are already underway, with a GoFundMe campaign launched to gather donations and a fundraising dinner being held at 139 Smith street on November 16th.

While there was significant support, Yohannes acknowledged that unfortunately there were also negative and discouraging comments. "What do we focus on? The mountain, the challenges, the voices from suspicious comments outside? No! In this situation, our choice is to focus on God and listen to Him," he said. Yohannes reflected on David's story, emphasizing that "the work of God is always a miracle. Romans 8:28 reminds us that He always uses every situation for good from ashes to glory." Letters have also been sent to Ethiopian fellowships across Canada, calling for solidarity and support.

When asked, “Where does God stand in all of this?” Yohannes reflected on his confidence in God’s presence. “If I know where God stands, that’s my confidence,” he said. He spoke of the last sermon delivered before the fire, titled “Emmanuel – God with us.” That message has since taken on  profound significance, serving as a reminder of God’s presence even in the midst of tragedy.

The tragedy has not only tested faith but also opened conversations about resilience. Yohannes emphasized the importance of staying connected with families in the congregation, offering encouragement, and ensuring that children’s questions about faith and loss are addressed. Sundays, he noted, are particularly tough for young members grappling with the reality of what has happened. “They have questions, and they need answers,” he said. Ensuring they feel heard is of utmost importance to him.

Through it all, HCIC has remained focused on rebuilding not just the physical space but the spirit of the community. The church’s vision remains clear with the hope of securing a new space and are actively looking at spaces as a step of faith, trusting that God will provide in His timing.

HCIC recently marked its seventh year in the building. Though the celebration was different this year, it served as a powerful reminder of the journey they have travelled and the faith that continues to unite them. The support of the community has been a source of strength, showing that even in the darkest times, compassion and hope can shine through and God is always with us.

Our hearts go out to the families affected by this tragic event. We trust that God’s presence will bring comfort and healing in these difficult times.
